How to use this template
Define economic unit
Identify your core unit: customer account, product sold, transaction, subscription, or customer cohort. Define time period (annual, lifetime).
Calculate unit revenue
Determine average revenue per unit: annual contract value, average transaction value, customer lifetime revenue, subscription lifetime revenue.
Calculate unit costs
Identify variable costs per unit: cost of goods, delivery cost, payment processing, support costs, customer acquisition cost (CAC), etc.
Calculate unit margin
Compute: (Unit revenue - unit variable costs) / unit revenue = unit contribution margin. Calculate payback period for CAC.
Analyze by segment
Calculate unit economics by customer segment, product type, geography, or sales channel. Identify most and least profitable units.
